Vana Nava Water Jungle: a family holiday at your own pace

Waterslides for the grandchildren, a leisurely float for you, and time together between adventures. Hua Hin’s jungle-themed water park has the makings of a rewarding holiday for all ages.

The most persuasive reason to visit a water park may well be holding your hand. Grandchildren have a way of making an afternoon of slides and splashing sound considerably more appealing than it did over breakfast.

At Vana Nava Water Jungle in Hua Hin, joining in needn’t mean committing to the steepest descent. There is room for different appetites for adventure, an essential ingredient when a family holiday brings together several generations.

Set in Nong Kae, the park combines tropical landscaping with colourful slides, pools and water-play areas. Its appeal lies in that variety: younger children can find their feet in the splash zones, confident older ones can graduate to more ambitious rides, and adults can choose how enthusiastically to participate.

For grandparents travelling with grandchildren, that flexibility matters. The pleasure is often in sharing an experience, whether that means a ride together or being there to hear an excited account immediately afterwards.

Abyss (pic above) is one of the park’s signature attractions, taking up to six riders together into a vast funnel. It offers the prospect of a shared family adventure, provided everyone meets the ride requirements and genuinely wants to take part. Boomerango, meanwhile, sends riders up a steep wall before returning them to earth with a splash. Neither is likely to require much encouragement from thrill-seeking teenagers.

There is, however, considerable merit in a less dramatic approach.

The Lazy River follows a course of more than 345 metres through the landscaped grounds, passing caves, bridges and islands. Floating along in a tube offers time to look around, exchange a few words and enjoy being in the water without racing towards anything. It could easily become the family’s preferred meeting point between more energetic excursions.

For smaller children, Vana Wonderland has spray features, splash pads and an octopus slide. Kiddie Cove provides fountains and play structures, while Coconut Beach adds a wave pool to the choices. These attractions give families scope to build a day around the youngest members rather than continually asking them to wait for the older ones.

The sensible approach is to resist doing everything. Choose a few priorities, allow time for lunch and shade, and leave room for the attraction everyone unexpectedly wants to repeat. A rented cabana may be worth considering as a family base; lockers, showers, towel hire and food outlets are also listed among the park’s facilities. Check package inclusions before booking, as the extras can influence the overall cost.

For anyone with concerns about steps, getting into tubes or the physical demands of particular rides, asking the park for specific advice beforehand will make planning easier. Children’s height and other ride restrictions deserve the same attention. Enthusiasm is a wonderful holiday companion, but it helps to know what everyone can comfortably enjoy.

Staying at the adjoining Holiday Inn Resort Vana Nava Hua Hin adds another dimension. Hotel guests receive complimentary unlimited water-park access, allowing a stay to be organised around shorter visits rather than one concentrated day. A morning in the park, a return to the room and another outing later can be an appealing rhythm for both children and adults.

The hotel also gives older guests reasons to enjoy the stay on their own terms. Its infinity pools on level 26 offer broad views towards the coast, with an undercover pool deck providing somewhere to sit and read. Tea Tree Spa offers massage and other treatments, while the fitness centre caters for those who prefer to maintain their usual exercise routine. These are useful options when another adult is taking a turn with the grandchildren.

Accommodation choices include Kid Suites with bunk beds and separate play areas, as well as larger suites that are well-suited to a multi-generational family group. The Bryde’s Kids Club and games room broaden the children’s entertainment beyond the water park. Before relying on the club for time apart, check its age limits and supervision arrangements.

Dinner can provide a more grown-up finish. Stella, the Italian restaurant on level 27, and THE SKY rooftop bar offer elevated views across Hua Hin and the Gulf. A meal overlooking the coast is an attractive counterpoint to the day’s activity, although THE SKY also advertises live DJs, so anyone seeking a quiet evening should enquire about timings.

Vana Nava’s strongest proposition for grandparents is the opportunity to share the grandchildren’s holiday without adopting their pace for every waking hour. Some moments call for joining the queue; others are best enjoyed from a comfortable seat.

And when a grandchild asks whether you remember that ride you took together, you may find the answer matters rather more than how adventurous it was.
